Summary of the Job: This recruitment is for a full-time Clinical Staff Chaplain at the VA Maine (Togus) Healthcare System located in Augusta, Maine.
The chaplain has full responsibility for providing a complete religious ministry to Veteran patients. The chaplain assesses religious, spiritual, moral and ethical problems of patients and plans and provides appropriate ministration, including individual in-depth pastoral ministry.
About Main (Togus) VA healthcare System: The Togus VAMC is a 67-operating bed facility with general medical, surgical, intermediate and mental health beds, as well as a 100-bed Nursing Home consisting of 50 Skilled and Longer Stay beds, and a 50-bed Dementia Unit. The oldest veterans' facility in the country, having opened in the fall of 1866, Togus is located approximately four miles east of Augusta, the state capital. The Togus campus encompasses 500
acres of buildings and natural woodlands serving as natural habitats for some of Maine's wildlife.
The Togus VAMC has served this nation's veterans for 138 years and is the oldest facility in the current Department of Veterans Affairs. A National Cemetery comprised of 5,373 burial sites is also located on campus. The first veteran was buried in the West Cemetery in 1867 and the last burial was in the East Cemetery in 1961.

The Chaplain's duties include but not limited to:
Working both in Hospice and non-Hospice Care, and patients served include: inpatients and outpatients, the newly admitted, pre- and post-operative patients, the critically ill, PTSD, traumatic brain injured, the terminally ill, homeless, nursing home, substance abuse, spinal cord injured, ambulatory care, psychiatric, and the families/significant others concerned.
Providing extensive and intensive pastoral counseling to meet the expressed needs and desires of individual patients.
Participating actively on interdisciplinary teams/groups, and committees to assure that the religious and spiritual dimensions of health and wellness are addressed in all aspects of the medical center's holistic patient care.
Assisting health care providers and treatment teams in recognizing and addressing the emotional and spiritual needs of veteran patients, using specialized knowledge and ability in pastoral care of the sick.
Assisting patients, providers and teams in translating religious and spiritual values into effective living.
Providing counsel and pastoral support to relatives of patients in difficult and trying situations to alleviate their anxieties, to foster effective cooperation of these relatives with the treatment regimen of the medical center, and to help them deal with grief.
Determining the need for and provide regular (e.g. pluralistic memorial services/ceremonies) worship services, at times and locations such that patients will have access.
Providing counsel on medical ethical issues, such as advance directives, in the context of the patient's particular faith background, when requested by patients.
Assuring as appropriate within a therapeutic milieu, that the right of each and every patient to free exercise of religion is upheld; and that patients are protected - from proselytizing by staff, other patients, or visitors, regardless of faith group.
Contributing to the formulation and accomplishment of chaplaincy objectives and activities by cooperating closely with colleagues and the supervisory chaplain in an ecumenical/interfaith team approach to assignments.
Developing and conducting a well-rounded program of religious ministry for veteran patients and family members that are fully integrated into the overall treatment program of the medical center.
Fostering community supports for the medical center and encourages individuals to volunteer in support of the religious program.
Facilitating for the needs of patients of all faith groups and will locate other staff chaplains or clergy persons from the community to meet specific religious needs that he/she cannot meet.
Being creative and innovative in the use of resources to foster ministry.
Collecting significant data on which to base original contributions to the literature of spiritual care and to provide for future research projects.
Documenting accurately in electronic records all contacts with patient's assessment, treatment and ministry per VA policies.

Education: A Master of Divinity from an accredited institution or the equivalent. Equivalent education is a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution plus at least 70 graduate semester hours which included all of the following: at least 20 semester hours in pastoral ministry; 20 semester hours in any combination of theology, ethics, and philosophy of religion; 20 semester hours in the study of sacred writings, including the study of languages in which sacred writings are written; and 10 semester hours in religious history and/or world religions.
Clinical Pastoral Education: In addition to the education requirement, applicants must have completed at least 2 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) as defined by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE). 800 hours of supervised ministry in a formal training program which incorporated both ministry formation and pastoral care skills development will be considered for equivalency to the required CPE.

Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work can help build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
At least three years of ministry experience. At least two years of this experience must have followed completion of the Master of Divinity or equivalent education. Experience during graduate education may count for up to one year of the three years of required experience. One year of the experience must have demonstrated all of the following:
(a) ability to serve as a consultant or expert to a multidisciplinary treatment team;
(b) in-depth knowledge of related professional fields, particularly in the behavioral sciences;
(c) understanding of, and ability to respond to, the particular concerns and issues pertaining to treatment of veterans;
(d) knowledge of the structure, regulations, practices, and programs of healthcare delivery systems;
(e) ability to interpret and apply a body of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in professional practice;
(f) ability to develop and maintain liaisons with a variety of outside organizations.
Completion of a doctoral degree directly related to pastoral ministry may be substituted for one year of this experience.

Applicants will be given a numerical score between 70 and 100. The numerical score is based on the totality of relevant competencies. It is not determined by summing scores on each competency.
