The Maine Conservation Corps Environmental Steward Program provides opportunities for members to gain experience in environmental education, volunteer leadership and community service projects. The rewards are unlimited.
The mission of the MCC is to: accomplish natural resource related projects, with long term public benefit, in partnership with public and private non-profit organizations; provide job training, education and service opportunities; provide conservation education; and promote and manage volunteer opportunities related to natural resources.
An Environmental Steward serves a 1700 (11 month) or 900 hour(6 month) term with a Host Site that shares our conservation mission. As an Environmental Steward, you will bring enthusiasm, expertise and focused effort toward recruiting and working with volunteers, working with watershed organizations to monitor water quality conditions, and assisting with research and public education of environmental issues. Some positions will also be involved in implementing recreational land use plans. Environmental Stewards earn a living allowance while gaining environmental experience, receive free health insurance, receive assistance with child care costs, earn an Education Award to use toward student loans or for future college tuition, and receive ongoing training and experience networking opportunities.
Training topics can include: Volunteer Management First Aid/CPR certification OnCorps and Quarterly Reporting Watershed and BioMonitoring Trail assessment and improvement Workplace Respect Principles of Leadership Communication and Diversity GPS Data Collection and Analysis. Essential Qualifications for ALL MCC Environmental Stewards are:
High School diploma or equivalent
Must be at least 18 years old
Must be a US Citizen
Must agree to criminal and sex offender background checks
Have the ability to live and perform strenuous work under challenging conditions
Have the desire to learn, serve others, and make a difference
Ability to follow directions
Responsible and reliable
Good communication skills
Excellent work ethic
Possesses motivation and initiative
Interest in personal growth and participating in on-going training
Previous planning and fundraising experience
Experience with volunteer management
Eligibility for AmeriCorps and ability to complete term of service
All state positions require a valid driver's license with a good 5 year driving record

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
