MEDICAL TECHNICIAN - Phlebotomy

This position involves a multi-grade career ladder.
The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-05.
At the GS-03 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence.
You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-05.
Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.
This position serves as a phlebotomist in the collection, processing and distribution of the required blood specimens from both hospitalized bed patients, ambulatory patients, and out-patients.
The Medical Technician - Phlebotomy will be located at the VA Maine Healthcare System in Augusta, ME.
The major duties and assignments are:
Preparing, gathering and sorting test collections and planning the collection of samples based on stet, routine or timed status of orders;Performing venipuncture procedure by following strict identification guidelines for patients;Corresponding test orders to collect blood samples in appropriate vacutainers for a wide variety of laboratory testing;Obtaining, transporting and delivering the collected specimens to various sections of the laboratory by following established guidelines, for testing in a timely manner;Documenting phlebotomy work performed in appropriate logs with required information for accurate workload and quality assurance reports; Answering inquiries by physicians, nurses and other clinical personnel regarding status of patients test orders and test results; Ensures that samples collected for Blood Bank section (Transfusion Medicine) are collected following established legal guidelines regarding appropriate paperwork; andAnd all other duties that may be assigned.

00pm, includes weekend and holiday rotationDESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION:
Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
